Sivonen’s thesis, titled “From Green to Clean: Finnish news media and the framing of EU climate policy during the von der Leyen I Commission,” explores how Finnish news outlets have framed EU climate initiatives during the first European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen. By focusing on the transition narrative from “green” ambitions to broader “clean” policy framing, Sivonen sheds light on how media discourse shapes public understanding of climate policy and the European Union’s role in addressing global environmental challenges.
AIACE Finland, an organisation representing former EU officials in Finland, awards the annual prize to recognize high-quality academic work related to the European Union. Through this award, the association aims to encourage young people to study and explore EU affairs. At the same time, the association hopes that a career in the European Union institutions will appeal to young people, as the number of Finnish officials has declined significantly in recent years.
Sivonen’s work is available through Helda, the University of Helsinki’s open-access digital repository, making it accessible to researchers, students, and the wider public. The award underscores the importance of fostering academic research that connects European policymaking with national perspectives and media narratives.
