Welcome New Data Science Students!
The Master’s Programme in Data Science invites our newly admitted students starting their studies in autumn 2021 to take a moment to explore this page and get to know us better.

Our students, staff and faculty are eager to welcome you!

The admission results for the application round that took place between 1 Dec 2020 and 15 Jan 2021 have been sent to the applicants to the e-mail address given on their application form. The results can also be found by logging into your My Studyinfo –service.

Greetings from the programme

Congratulations! You have been accepted in the Master’s Programme in Data Science at the University of Helsinki. The University of Helsinki is among the top 1% of the world’s research universities, and we in the Master’s Programme in Data Science are very excited at the possibility of you joining our community.

This page gives you some information on studying in our programme, and you have already received a letter with more information especially about the skills we assume that you have at the beginning of your studies. You will also receive more information from the Admission Services of the University of Helsinki during the spring and summer regarding how to accept the study place and practical logistics of moving to Helsinki. In case you have any questions, feel free to send us an email at data-science-studies@helsinki.fi.

Coronavirus (Covid-19) updates

The University of Helsinki's top priority is always the health, welfare, and safety of our students and staff. We closely monitor the situation and we will keep you informed about the teaching arrangements for the upcoming academic year. The semester will start on September 6 with the orientation taking place the week before. As of April 2021, we are planning towards combining contact teaching and remote teaching for the orientation and some key courses. While we strive to offer contact teaching, fully remote participation in teaching will be possible.

New students accepted in the Dec 2020 - Jan 2021 application round, please follow the page with general coronavirus (COVID-19) related questions and answers for admitted students.

You can follow the overall coronavirus situation at the University of Helsinki and current arrangements on the University website.

Greetings from the students

Dear fellow students, congratulations!

We are so happy to welcome you to our Data Science programme! You are about to embark on a life-changing adventure as we did a few years ago. The programme has been running for a few years now and we have formed a very close community of students, of friends. We, international students, have decided to write down some of our experiences for you. Hopefully these paragraphs will fill you with anticipation of the amazing two years that you’re about to experience!

Studying in the programme

The University of Helsinki is a strongly research-oriented university, which shows in our teaching and the skills we require from our students. In addition to the basic skills of understanding and remembering, we expect you to be able to apply your skills and knowledge to different problems, as well as to analyse, evaluate, and create new information based on existing material.

We have a very active data science community at the University of Helsinki and a long-standing tradition of student engagement, peer support, and active collaboration between students and staff. We regularly organise joint activities and events for students, teachers, and other staff members, and if you have any ideas, questions, or problems, you have a chance to get help and get your voice heard.

Preparing for your studies

We highly recommend you use the time in the summer to learn the Python programming language, in case you are not already familiar with it. It is commonly used by many data science tools, and it allows you to process data more efficiently than Java. The first courses in the programme also contain short Python tutorials for those not familiar with the language, but they are more useful for you, if you already have looked into Python before arriving here.

You can also take our new online course Data Analysis with Python. The course assumes you know basic programming and teaches the basics of Python for data science. The course is available from 3rd May onwards.

In mathematics, you should be familiar with the basic rules of linear algebra, understand and be able to apply differential and integral calculus in univariate settings and understand their extensions in higher dimensional problems. In probability theory, you need to understand and be able to apply basic sum and product rules of probabilities as well as marginal and conditional probabilities. If you need to brush up on these topics, please see for example the Mathematics for Machine Learning book.

HelsinkiUNI International Talent Programme

The Master's Programme Data Science participates in the HelsinkiUNI International Talent Programme (HITP). It is a group mentoring programme where Finnish companies and international students are brought together to share ideas and to learn from each other.  The aim is to support international students in building professional networks in Finland and to gain insight into local working life.

What can you as an international student gain from HITP?

  • If your application is successful, you are placed in a group and assigned a mentor from a Finnish company or organisation. When applying, you can indicate which of the participating companies interest you the most.

  • You will receive support in growing your network among both professionals and fellow students. During the programme, your group will meet 4–5 times on the company premises. Themes for the meet-ups include a company introduction and an overview of current competency requirements in that specific field. You will also get to present your own skills to the company.

  • When the HITP has been completed, the goal is that cooperation can continue between you and the company if both parties wish to do so.

International data science students will have a chance to apply to the HelsinkiUNI International Talent Programme in autumn 2021. You can find more information about the programme here.

Orientation and tutoring

Teaching for the academic year 2021-2022 officially starts on September 6, 2021, but we highly recommend that you participate in the orientation activities for the new students already the week before (that starts on 30 Aug 2021).

You will be assigned to a tutor group led by a student tutor. During the orientation activities and in the tutor group, you will learn more about studying in our programme, get support with administrative matters and get introduced to the university campuses and facilities. This will make it easier for you to start your studies and life in Helsinki.

The detailed information and schedule concerning your orientation and tutoring will be published in the summer. Make sure the right programme is selected in the dropdown menu in order to access the correct information.

Please note that depending on the coronavirus situation, we are prepared to organise the orientation activities partly or entirely remotely.
