Apr 25: Sustainability and responsibility network meeting - Sustainability expertise

Time: Apr 25, 2024 at 3.00-5.00 pm (EET)
Place: Partly hybrid event: Viikki Info Centre Korona, room K1088 and Zoom

What kind of sustainability issues should we as a university community address, and what kind of expertise is needed? This time, the Network will discuss current topics on sustainability and sustainability expertise. We will look at what sustainability expertise actually means and how it is supported at university. We will hear examples of sustainability activities and sharing expertise within the university community. In group discussions, we will bring our expertise together and look for ways to promote sustainability in our own working and study communities, on our own campus, in the university as a whole, or in society in general.

The common language used will be English. Group discussions will take place in Finnish, Swedish or English, depending on what is common to all members of the small group. Small group discussions are for both present and remote participants.

The sustainability and responsibility network of the University of Helsinki promotes the transition towards an increasingly sustainable University and society. The network provides a place for learning, networking and influencing related to sustainability and responsibility. 

May 15: Alumni Day 2024: Skills for (working) life

The Alumni Day is the most important event of the year for University of Helsinki alumni. The event has a different theme each year that is closely integrated with current issues and focused on offering perspectives for the future. Sharp content is paired with relaxed discussion and networking with other alumni.

This spring, Alumni Day is comprised of a morning and an evening session. Their shared purpose is to offer insight and a chance to develop skills in relations to current issues in (working) life. Alumni Day is bilingual with both Finnish and English as official languages in the event. We look forward to seeing you!

Morning session: Helsinki Alumni x MiB - Perspectives on a family-friendly working life

Time: Wed 15.5.2024 at 9-11 (livestream 9-10)

During the morning session we talk about and discuss family-friendly working life. You'll hear perspectives on combining work and family, career courage, multicultural working life and the Finnish family leave reform. Live at Think Corner, you also have ther chance to discuss these themes with our speakers and other participants in Learning Cafe style discussions. Via the livestream you can listen to our speakers' presentations.

Evening session: Skills for (working) life

Welcome to the evening session of the Alumni Day! In this session, you will get to know current skills, phenomena and perspectives that relate to (working) life.

During the evening, you will be introduced to tools that help you develop your competencies as well as perspectives on current issues. You'll hear an inspiring keynote speech on leading diversity and tailor the evening to your needs by choosing workshops to attend. Some topics in the workshops are design thinking, sustainability competences and refining your professional profile.

May 29: The Inaugural lectures of the new professors

Time: May 29, 2023 starting at 2 pm (EET)
Place: UH Main Building (Aleksanterinkatu 5.Helsinki)
Dress code: Participants in the procession wear a dark suit. Other participants to the ceremony should take into account the nature of the event.

The lectures are popular introductions to the professors' own field of science and current research questions. After the lecture day, the audience is also welcome to attend inauguration ceremony in the Great Hall, where one of the new professors will give their own inaugural lecture. A more detailed programme of the event will be published on this page later in the spring.

Mar 20: EU Alumni Club evening - ethical EU lobbying

This evening event at Helsinki EU Office was organized by the University of Helsinki EU Alumni Club. 

The panel discussion offered insights to EU lobbying and its ethical perspectives. The University of Helsinki activities in Brussels were introduced by the UH Director of Development for research, Ritva Dammert. The practical perspectives of EU lobbying were reflected by Member of Parliament Heidi Hautala and Inquiries Officer (European Ombudsman) Emily Tullberg shared insights on ethical lobbying. After the panel discussion there was time for a relaxed mingle with some catering.

Feb 13-15: People and Planet: From theory to solutions 2024

Time: Feb 13-15, 2024 (registration deadline Jan 29)
Place: Lahti University Campus

This international conference will bring together researchers, decisionmakers, specialists and other stakeholders interested in planetary health, sustainability and wellbeing.

Participation (registration fee) includes 3 days of transdisciplinary sessions, discussions, presentations and posters that spur transformative action through scientific knowledge.

The conference will focus on how human health and the health of the planet are closely connected and what can be done to protect and enhance both. In particular, the conference encourages finding solutions in complex systems and interlinked crises of climate change, biodiversity loss and the rise of noncommunicable diseases.

Jan 25: The Night of Science at the Helsinki Collegium - Who Cares? Ethics and politics of care in uncertain times & Open Offices

The Helsinki Collegium's program for Night of Science begins with an open office hour, during which visitors have the chance to learn about current research of our fellows.

Then, a panel discussion with Collegium fellows addresses the ethics and politics of care and belonging. Should our societies become more caring – and if so, then how? Does caring for some mean excluding others?

The evening concludes with a musical performance by Astrid Swan, who is currently working at HCAS as Kone Foundation Art Fellow.

Dress code: Participants in the procession wear a dark suit. Other participants to the ceremony should take into account the nature of the event.

Twenty-seven newly appointed professors of the University of Helsinki will give their inaugural lectures on Wednesday, 13 December 2023, starting at 14. The lectures are open to the public and take place in the University’s Main Building (Aleksanterinkatu 5). The public can watch the lectures also via live stream. The lectures serve as popular introductions to the professors’ fields of science and current research issues.

The programme below includes the timetable, lecture rooms and topics for individual lectures. The inaugural lectures will be held in the language of the topic indicated in the programme. The inauguration ceremony will begin at 16.30 in the Great Hall. The programme includes a speech by Chancellor Kaarle Hämeri, musical performances and introductions of the new professors. In addition, the inauguration ceremony will feature an inaugural lecture by Professor of Plant Biodiversity Anna-Liisa Laine.

Aug 17 - Nov 30: Photography exhibition: Lost, endangered, saved

Photographer Perttu Saksa has photographed animals humanity has threatened from the bone collection of the University of Helsinki’s Finnish Museum of Natural History.

Perttu Saksa is an award-winning photographer and visual artist. In his art, he focuses on the relationship between humans and the environment, as well as on natural history and related collections.

The exhibition is free of charge.

Nov 29: Think & Lead - Why you should be ready to recruit international talents

We will discuss the questions related to successful recruitment and retention of international talents. Regina Ainla from Business Finland will share insights on the existing support mechanisms for employers related to the topic. And we will hear a personal case experience from alum Paulo de Tarso Fonseca Silva, who is a 2017 graduate from the University of Helsinki and is currently working as a consultant in Finland.

Join the peer alumni network to discuss about this current and also nationally important topic, and get tips from the speakers and other participants. Limited amount of places, so that we are able to host an interactive morning for registered participants.

The Swedish Alumni Club together with the Finnish Institute invited alumni to attend an interesting evening event with Helsinki Alumni member Laura Solanko as the key note alumni speaker. Other panelists were Russia researcher and Professor Ann-Mari Sätre from Uppsala university and researcher, Associate Professor Jesper Roine from Stockholm School of Economics.

Before the discussion part all alumni were welcome to join a relaxed mingle at the Winter Garden of the Finnish Institute from 5 pm.

The event was a great opportunity to meet fellow UK-based alumni and reconnect after several years without Helsinki Alumni events in the UK. And to learn about the interesting NATO and security policy related research done by professor Juhana Aunesluoma, who is working as a visiting researcher at Oxford in fall 2023.

Sep 28: Sustainable Pharmacy networking event

This event included a topical Keynote speech by Dr. Gerd Maack from the German Environment Agency UBA, who gave insight to the current challenges and regulation regarding pharmaceuticals in the environment. We also heard a broad setting of presentations from different actors in the pharmaceutical sector on their aspects regarding sustainability challenges as well as solutions to support sustainable development in the field.

The event provided insights into the past and a glimpse into the future as Anne Remes and Tom Böhling, the current and former Vice Rectors for Sustainability and Responsibility, engaged in a dialogue about university as a forerunner. Additionally, there were inspiring and concise sustainability Pecha Kucha presentations shedding light on the university's current initiatives in sustainability and responsibility.

We invite students, employees and alumni of the University of Helsinki to join sustainability-themed events and be part of a dynamic community. No advance knowledge of sustainability and responsibility is required. Instead, an inquisitive mindset and interest in building an increasingly sustainable world are enough. The network’s operations stem from its participants, reflecting their attitudes and goals.

June 7: Celebrating international graduates with Helsinki Alumni

University of Helsinki alumni network, Helsinki Alumni celebrates our recent and coming graduates, our new alumni. We also want to inspire our graduates in their path to find their own career and interests, as well as to share inspiring information on Helsinki Alumni activities available. Inspirational speaker of the online event is alumnus, certified business coach Roberto D'Abrosca. UH greeting by Vice-Rector, Professor Kai Nordlund.
