Unforgettable experiences in the company of other alumni and academic experts.
The world's oldest university
Join other alumni on a tour of Morocco from 5 to 12 November 2017 and experience a country where the past and the present live side by side. Morocco combines the fast pace of big cities with colourful historical environments where Berbers, Romans and Muslims have lived and vied for power since 200 BC. We will visit al-Qarawiyyin in the old royal city of Fez. Established in 859, al-Qarawiyyin is the world’s oldest university, which developed into the world’s leading school of Islam. Morocco is a fascinating blend of Berber culture, the influence of the Roman Empire, European colonialism and Arab Islam. The scenery varies from the impressive Atlas Mountains and the Sahara Desert to the coastlines of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean. An expert lecturer will accompany the group.

Sailing with alumni
Alumni will step on board the Sea Cloud II for a trip to the Caribbean region from 4 to 15 January 2018. The route from Barbados to Antigua is not only stunningly beautiful and varied, but also ideal in terms of wind direction during this time of year. The trip will be a comfortable and pleasant experience: we will enjoy the sunny climate, beaches and verdant nature, and will visit historical islands including Saint Lucia and Saint-Barthélemy, which are former colonies of Sweden and Denmark. Several persons of Finnish origin are also connected to the history of the islands. The period of Swedish rule is still reflected, for example, in the Swedish-language street signs on St Barths. The Sea Cloud II is the world’s largest three-mast barque and continues to use traditional sailing methods. The experience will be unforgettable even for the seasoned traveller. The captain and crew follow centuries old sailing practices. The atmosphere on board is relaxed and international, and the experienced crew ensure a pleasant cruise. The gastronomy and service also meet the highest international standards.

Strategic Sri Lanka
The mythical and fantastically beautiful Sri Lanka is a multicultural tropical island in the Indian Ocean. Its tea and spices have benefited both colonial powers and merchants. Previously known as Ceylon, the country was a strategic junction for trade already at the time of the Silk Road circa 120 BC thanks to its geographical location and deep ports. The island has a diverse culture with several languages and religions associated with the country’s different ethnic groups: the Sinhalese, the Indian Tamils, Moors, Burgers, Malays, Kaffirs and the aboriginal Vedda. The alumni trip to Sri Lanka will take place during the winter break, from 17 to 25 February 2018. We will enjoy unique nature experiences, long sandy beaches, impressive national parks, and natural and cultural UNESCO world heritage sites.
The brochure for the trip will be published in April. Make a preliminary reservation per email to Liisa Suonsivu at Axtours; firstname.lastname@example.org or call 040 483 4950.
