Maple Leaf and Eagle 2024 Conference

Call For Papers
NORTH AMERICAN UNIONS AND DIVISIONS (TRANS)NATIONAL TALES

The 20th Maple Leaf and Eagle Conference will take place at the University of Helsinki from May 14th to May 17th, 2024. For nearly four decades, the conference has provided a vibrant and inclusive space for cross-disciplinary scholarship on North American Studies while addressing a rich tapestry of subjects. The upcoming Maple Leaf and Eagle Conference continues this tradition. Our theme stresses the concurrences, contestations, and paradoxes at the heart of North America and their transnational connections and ramifications. These historical and contemporary phenomena have inspired politicians, artists, writers, and musicians as well as scholars from many different backgrounds, whose lives and work can help us understand the social fabrics of the United States and Canada. In short, we focus on both the unions and divisions that are at the core of North American experience. We embrace a wide selection of academic specialties and research traditions and welcome a broad range of submissions.

We seek submissions on, for instance:
  • American Studies methods and approaches
  • Institutions, pedagogies, and teaching North America
  • Historical and contemporary terrains
  • Arts, music, and literary traditions
  • Experiences, discourses, and memory
  • Political cultures, law, and economics
  • Social movements, and demographics
  • Religious Studies
  • Local, regional, national, comparative, transnational, and global North America
  • Indigenous North America
  • Race, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and class
  • Borders and borderland studies
  • The environment and environmental discourses
  • Materialities, immaterialities, ephemerality, and artificial intelligence
  • Media studies, including digital media (the internet, gaming, social media, etc.)
  • Decolonial, Postcolonial & Anticolonial Studies in North America
  • Settler Colonial Studies
