Optional pre-conference excursion (June 21)
We offer as an optional pre-conference excursion a one-day boat trip to Tallinn, Estonia, on Sunday June 21. To be able to join for the trip, please select the option during the registration and arrive in Helsinki no later than the evening of Saturday, June 20.
Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, has a charming, well-preserved medieval city center, and a rich history that involves strong influence over the centuries by Danish, Swedish, German and Russian rulers and merchants. Like Helsinki, it is situated right at the Baltic sea, but the two cities are otherwise quite different in character due to different historical origins.
The excursion will involve:
- Boat trips (2 hours each) from Helsinki to Tallinn and back on a new, 2000-person capacity boat "Tallink MegaStar" over the Gulf of Finland. The views from the boat over the sea are beautiful in summer. The boat offers several restaurants, ships, cafes and a large tax-free shop. Due to the large size of the boats, the ride is quite smooth except if there is a major storm - fortunately these come very rarely in June.
- A guided tour by a professional guide in Tallinn
- A lunch in the rustic medieval-style restaurant Olde Hansa
- Free time in Tallinn to visit museums, cafes, or just walk around the old city
Members of the conference organizing committee will participate in the tour and can give extra advice on what to visit.
The extra cost for the excursion (70 EUR) covers the boat trip, the guided tour and the lunch food (drinks other than water are to be paid separately by the participants).
The excursion starts at 09:45 on Sunday morning in the West Harbour terminal in Helsinki and ends at about 10 pm when the boat comes back. Due to maritime regulations, we need to ask the name and birth date of each excursion participant. Also, since we are changing the country, participants should carry a valid passport or EU id card.
