Plenary Speakers

Our plenary speakers are influential scholars, who joined the conference to make crucial contributions in keynote sessions and in our methods workshop.

In our 2020 conference, we were honoured to welcome the following speakers:

Cori Hayden

Cori Hayden is a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, Berkeley, where she conducts research and teaches on the anthropology of science, technology and medicine, with an emphasis in Latin America.  She recently served as the Chair of the Department of Anthropology at UC Berkeley and was the Director of the Center for Science, Technology, Medicine, and Society from 2010-2013.  Hayden received her PhD in Anthropology from UC Santa Cruz in 2000 and has held fellowships at the Center for US-Mexican Studies in San Diego, Girton College at the University of Cambridge, and the Center for Advanced Studies in the Social and Behavioral Sciences (CASBS) in Palo Alto.  Hayden is the author of the award-winning book When Nature Goes Public (Princeton University Press, 2003), and is currently finishing a book entitled The Spectacular Generic, which analyzes the contours of a 21st century politics of the pharmaceutical copy in Latin America.  She is also co-convenor of Clouds and Crowds, a UC Humanities Network-funded initiative on contemporary market formations, political atmospheres, aesthetic possibilities, and modes of inquiry. 

Markus Kröger

Markus Kröger is an Associate Professor of Global Development Studies at the University of Helsinki and a research fellow at the Academy of Finland. Professor Kröger is a member of the Helsinki Institute of Sustainability Science and one of the founding members of The Global Extractivisms and Alternatives research initiative (EXALT). He has written extensively on global natural resource politics, conflicts, and social resistance movements and the economic outcomes, especially in relation to iron ore mining and forestry. He is also an expert in political economy, development, and globalization in Latin America, India, and the Arctic.

Anni Kajanus

Anni Kajanus is an Assistant Professor in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Helsinki, and a specialist in the anthropology of China. Her research focuses on culture and cognition, morality, cooperation, competition and conflict; migration, education, gender and family. 

Her most recent research brings together methods and approaches from anthropology and psychology, for a comparative study of children's social and cognitive development across cultural-historical contexts, including cooperative behaviours, morality, understanding of social hierarchies, etc. The broader aim of this work is to contribute to the multi-disciplinary study of the origins of human social behaviour.

Anni is the author of Chinese Student Migration, Gender and Family, which situates the family project of investing in the overseas education of the only child within the wider socio-moral transformation of the Chinese society, and China's engagement in the international education market.

Anne Kouvonen

Anne Kouvonen is Professor of Social Policy at the University of Helsinki. She is an internationally renowned cross-disciplinary scholar with qualifications from Sociology, Public Health and Psychology. She has published 135+ international peer-reviewed papers, mainly on social determinants of health. She has held research fellowships and lectureships in several universities across Europe, including two Russell Group Universities in the UK. She is the deputy director of Helsinki Health Study, PI of an Academy of Finland funded project, and the University of Helsinki WP leader of the Strategic Research Council funded DigiIN consortium.

Tuomas Ylä-Anttila

Tuomas Ylä-Anttila is an Associate Professor of Political Science at the University of Helsinki. He currently leads four research projects on climate change politics and policy, and chairs the 14-country comparative research effort Comparing Climate Change Policy Networks (see compon.org).  His work has appeared in journals such as Global Environmental Change, Public Administration, Policy Studies Journal, Governance and British Journal of Sociology.
