Sustainability transition marked the work of the previous EU Commission, whose Green Deal delivered many ambitious legislative initiatives that sought to steer the EU and its Member States towards a just transition. However, the path has not been straightforward, and the current Commission has even backed down on its promises and achievements. Simultaneously, the geopolitical situation has moved the focus on security and defense, increasingly sidelining the green transition from the EU agenda.
The 14th EELF Conference discusses the role of environmental law in this ongoing sustainability transition, where political interests shift, but the environmental polycrisis of climate change, biodiversity degradation, and pollution continue. Is the path to ever deepening crisis set or can environmental law – or any law – still have a role in changing their course? More foundationally, what is the role of environmental law in securing sustainable and just societies in Europe? Where have our institutions – local, national or transnational – left us room for improvement? Which pathways, underexplored or novel, and solutions should be explored? We look forward to three days of stimulating and critical conversation, also examining the foundations of legal thinking concerning the closer conference themes that will be announced in early 2027.
