Welcome to the 8th Nordic STS Helsinki 14.6.-16.6.2027 and to
participating, engaging, making, intervening, doing, democratizing, infrastructuring, tinkering, ecologizing, digitalizing, medicalizing, environmentalizing, gendering, politicizing, valuating, radiating, undergrounding, economicing, urbanizing, biotechnologicizing, queering, technoscientivizing, embodying, humanicing, nonhumanizing, colonizing, artificializing, normalizing, socializing, ironicing with your colleagues.
The gerund, the grammatical form of verbs that denotes doing, is an unmistakable road-sign towards STS. Gerunds direct our attention to processual epistemics and ontics. For many, the -ing is also a call to arms for social analysts to making – knowledge, science, technology, design… whatever it may be that -ings – otherwise.
Observing how the gerund road-sign is attached to almost everything and anything is an apt way to underline the technoscientification of current modes of existence. Humanity may have to come to learn how to land on earth, but it is certainly clear that the current state of the earth has landed in STS. And let us not forget pairing STS-ings with real-world explorations and the engagements with creative arts, design and making and the ways of doing STS therein.
As the 8th Nordic STS completes the second round of Nordic STS that has grown dramatically along the growth of STS in the Nordics, we invite you to bring your sessions and your papers about the STSing that you do – let’s make the scope and diversity of Nordic STS visible!
