Tallinn is an amazing blend of old and new. The world-famous Old Town was largely constructed between the 13th and 16th centuries and is designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tallinn is easy to reach from Helsinki with a ferry, and in one day our group will explore the Seaplane harbour, the Old Town with the Medieval Kogg under conservation and so much more. Our Estonian colleagues will take good care of us. Join the adventure!
The Seaplane Harbour accommodates one of Europe´s grandest maritime museums. It includes the Seaplane Hangar, which was built to become part of Peter the Great´s naval fortress 100 years ago on orders from the Russian emperor Nicholas II. The architecture of the Hangar is remarkable, featuring the world´s first columnless thin-shell concrete domes of such volume. The building was used for seaplanes until the Second World War, and now it is serving as a museum. Come and see it yourself!

m/aux Svanhild af Borgå:
Svanhild was built in Grännes, Finland, in 1948 for timber freight traffic around the Baltic Sea. In 1972 the ship’s cargo hold was transformed into a recreational space, and new masts and rigging were constructed according to the ship’s original model. Renovations were continued in 2006 when Svanhild received a new keel and the ship’s technical systems and interior fixtures were renewed. In 2017 the rigging was rebuild and the ship became a three masted topsail schooner, and is at the moment the only sailing square rigger in Finland. Svanhild is an excellent setting for both evening gatherings as well as cruises lasting several days. The ship is equipped with seven 2-3-person cabins, accommodating up to 20 people. On day cruises Svanhild can hold up to 60 people.
Svanhild was approved to The Finnish Heritage Agency’s registry of traditional tall ships in 1994.

Conference excursion to Turku 5th of June
Price 65 €
Jump into a bus with colleagues and in about two hours, you will find yourself in a medieval city of Turku in western Finland. Turku is a European city of culture where fresh sea winds, breath of history and modern bustle are side by side. Our main task is to visit the Forum Marinum, a maritime center comprising a national special maritime museum, and the Finnish Navy Museum. Forum Marinium is located next to the Turku Castle, more than 700 years old historical monument, standing guard of the river Aura.
The museum provides several interesting exhibitions during a year and displays a very interesting boat collection. The maritime centre has a considerable collection of museum vessels: two tall sail ships, four naval ships and several smaller vessels, ranging from a steam harbour tugboat to a police boat.
After a nice lunch at the museum restaurant, the trip continues to a dockyard of Ruissalo, which is refreshing from a closed area to a popular venue. The area is still functioning as an active dockyard for wooden vessels. In Turku, there are even bigger dockyards, nothing to brag about, but you knew that some of the biggest cruising ships in the world are still built in Turku.
In the evening, the bus will take you back to Helsinki with the bag filled with new experiences and stories.
Conference excursion to Kotka 5th of June
Price 55 €
Jump into a bus with colleagues and in about 1,5 hours, you will find yourself in an industrial maritime setting in Eastern Finland. Explore the Maritime Centre Vellamo at the Old Port of Kotka!
The Maritime Centre Vellamo is a modern and unique museum complex that consist of two museums that tell the stories of the sea and exhibit local history. It is also known for it's breathtaking wave-like architecture.
Vellamo is the home of the national Maritime museum of Finland. A grand exhibition about Ruotsinsalmi - the Svenskund battles will be opening on May 2020. Come and feel the battles yourself!
Museum ship, the icebreaker Tarmo, was built in Newcastle in 1907, and it was purchased as the 3rd icebreaker of the Finnish state ice breaker fleet. Tarmo is the second oldest steam-powered ice breaker in the world and is also a record breaker what it comes to operating years - it served for almost 70 years. Tarmo spends its retirement years right next to Vellamo under the gentle care of the Maritime museum of Finland, and it is open for visitors during summer.
In Kotka you may also get charmed by the rapids of Langinkoski, as did the Emperor Alexander III and his wife Maria Feodorovna in 1880. They loved the place so much that they wished for a private lodging to be built for their family's use at the gorgeous riverside spot that today serves as a nature park area. The Imperial Fishing Lodge museum is open to public during summers.
