Checklist for new visiting students

The checklist below applies to those students who have been granted a visiting student status at the University of Helsinki, i.e. your home university does not have a student exchange agreement with UH.

Before arrival

1. Fill in the Student Registration Form that the International Exchange Services has sent you. Return the form as soon as possible before you arrive in Helsinki by sending it to studentexchange@helsinki.fi

2. Apply for housing as soon as possible. You can apply for housing immediately after submitting your UH application.

3. Non-EU students: Apply for a residence permit as soon as possible. The processing time for the permit can be over a month (even 2-3 months in China), so it is important that you apply as early as possible. More information available in the Permits section. When you apply for a residence permit, please ask to be registered in the Finnish Population Information System. By doing so, you will receive a Finnish personal identity code already before arrival, which will make your life in Finland easier.

4. EU-students: Be sure to obtain a European Health Insurance Card from your home country. Read more in the Insurance section.

5. Contact persons for your Erasmus Learning Agreement can be found here

6. Join the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY), be a part of the active community of 28000 students and make the most of the student like in Helsinki! Further information on the Student Union website.

7. Remember to bring your passport and documents regarding your health history, e.g. vaccination certificates, possible prescription medicines, with you.

After arrival

1. Visit the Welcome Fair at the University and attend the orientation arranged by your Faculty. Exact dates and times are available on the Orientation and Welcome Fair website.

2. EU-students: Citizens of EU/EEA countries do not need a residence permit or visa, but if the stay in Finland lasts longer than three months, they need to apply for a right to reside in Finland at Finnish Immigration Service MIGRI. When you register your right to reside in Finland at MIGRI, please ask to be registered in the Finnish Population Information System. By doing so, you will receive a Finnish personal identity code, which will make your life in Finland easier. More information here.

Start by filling out an application online in the e-service Enter Finland or a paper application. Make sure that you have all the necessary attachments for your application and bring them with you when you visit the service point. You can book an appointment beforehand in the appointment system. You can also visit a service point and queue to submit your application but please be prepared for long queues.

3. Students from the Nordic countries: Register at the municipal register office (maistraatti) if your stay lasts longer than 6 months. When visiting the local register office (maistraatti) also remember to ask to be registered in the Finnish Population Information System. By doing so, you will receive a Finnish personal identity code, which will make your life in Finland easier.

4. Non-EU students who have applied for a residence permit before arrival: you do not need to register your right to reside in Finland, because you already have a residence permit.

5. Obtain a Travel Card after you have a student discount certificate for the travel card (certificates are available at the Welcome Fair and afterwards from the Student Services). The student discount is only available to Bachelor and Master level students under the age of 30.

6. If you have joined the Student Union of the University of Helsinki (HYY), you can apply for the student card at https://frank.fi/en/

7. Update your Finnish address in the student register. You can do this yourself via the Weboodi system.

8. Open a bank account if you need one.
