Prices, Accommodation and Cancellation Policy
Helsinki Summer School course fee includes
- Registering to the course & customer service
- Teaching and study facilities in Helsinki
- Free-of-charge events of the HSS Social Programme
After you have applied and been accepted to the course
After your acceptance to the course you will have one week (7 days) to pay the course fee. If we do not receive your payment by the deadline, your course reservation will be cancelled. If you wish to renew your registration contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org for further instructions.
- If you wish to change your reservations after you have submitted your application, contact us by email at email@example.com. Please do not make any changes to your application yourself.
- Please do not pay any fees before you have received a confirmation and payment instructions concerning the acceptance, accommodation or social programme reservations.
- We recommend that you do not pay any other fees than the course fee before you have been granted a visa if you require one.
How to pay the fees
Fees are payable through an online bank transfer or with a credit card after you have been accepted.
Please make the payments for the accommodation and / or social programme only after receiving our confirmation e-mail about your reservation and payment instructions.
Payments are made through the Verifone Finland Oy, BlueCommerce website. The realiser of the payment transfer service and the provider of the payment service is Verifone Finland Oy, BlueCommerce (0943819-9) in cooperation with Finnish banks and credit institutions. Verifone Finland Oy, BlueCommerce acquires the payment transaction and delivers the payment to the University of Helsinki. From the user perspective, the service functions in the same way as traditional online payment processes. Verifone Finland Oy is a licensed payment institution.
Course Fees 2020
- Degree and PhD students:
Early Bird 900 EUR (until 28 Feb 2020) / normal fee 990 EUR
Early Bird 1400 EUR (until 28 Feb 2020) / normal fee 1490 EUR
- Students of the University of Helsinki and the students doing their exchange at the University of Helsinki before or directly after summer school 1 ECTS=15 EUR
- Helsinki Summer School and University of Helsinki
Alumni receive a 50 EUR discount of the course fee, provided they do not already study at the University of Helsinki.
Social Programme Fees 2020
Most HSS Social Programme events are free of charge. However, these two events have fees for all participants:
- Evening on an Island (Suomenlinna) 25 EUR
- Wildlife and Sauna Trip (Nuuksio) 75 EUR
NB We only have a limited number of places available for these events. Please register to the event in your online application form. You will get a confirmation of your participation when we have processed your application.
Kindly note that the system does not update in real-time so it might be possible to select a social programme event through the online form even when the activity may already be fully-booked.
Also note that the social programme fees are non-refundable.
Unfortunately, Helsinki Summer School is not able to provide you with contacts to scholarship sources. We recommend that you contact your own university for more information on possible scholarships and/or grants.
Accommodation period 2020: Mon 3 – Fri 21 Aug 2020
Studio flats for one person (single occupancy only, no exceptions!) at Vuolukiventie 1, Helsinki. Bedding and towel included. Free Wi-Fi, sauna and laundry facilities. Unihome Pihlajamäki is located in the Pihlajamäki district, Northeast part of Helsinki, only a bus ride away from the City Centre.

- Studio flat with a kitchenette and bathroom 670 EUR / room
Fairly basic and minimalistic single and twin hostel rooms available (shared bathrooms, lounges and kitchens). Located at: Linnankatu 9, Helsinki. Bedding and towel included. Free Wi-Fi, coin-operated washing machines. All floors have separate showers and washroom facilities for men and women.

- A bed in a Eurohostel budget room 570 EUR / person
- A bed in a Eurohostel standard twin room 620 EUR / person
- Single room (standard single) 950 EUR / room
If you are an international student and starting your Master's or Bachelor's Degree studies in autumn 2020 at the University of Helsinki, please see housing instructions for degree students. Apply for housing from the 1 Aug 2020 in case you are applying to Helsinki Summer School.
As for now, Helsinki Summer School continues to proceed with all of the arrangements and preparations. In case the situation changes, we will inform about this as soon as possible, latest 8 May, 2020.
Kindly note that, if HSS needs to be cancelled because of the coronavirus situation, all paid HSS fees (course fee, accommodation fee when booked via HSS, social programme fees) will be fully refunded.

Registration is always binding. The relevant fee is payable after you have been accepted to the Helsinki Summer School.
If you cancel your participation latest May 31, Helsinki Summer School will refund you the course fee minus
- the service fee (300 EUR)
- all banking costs.
Please note, that if your course fee is less than the service fee and banking costs together, the course fee will not be refunded.
After May 31, nothing of the course fee will be refunded. The same policy applies if you are forced to cancel because you did not receive a visa.
The course fee cannot be transferred to the Helsinki Summer School taking place the year after.
If you cancel your accommodation latest May 31, Helsinki Summer School will refund the accommodation fee minus
- the service fee (300 EUR)
- all banking costs.
After May 31, the accommodation fee will not be refunded. The same policy applies if you are forced to cancel because you did not receive a visa.
Social Programme Fees
The social programme fees (Evening on an Island, Wildlife and Sauna) are non refundable.

Changes in Course Offerings
Should a course be cancelled, the Helsinki Summer School reserves the right to place the student on another course.
