Between the June of 2005 and the July of 2008, before his current appointment, Päivänsalo served as the scientific secretary of the History of Mind research unit, as a research fellow on the project Legitimacy and Ethics funded by the Academy of Finland, and as a Helsinki University post doctoral research fellow. He specializes in John Rawls's (1921-2002) social liberalism and subsequent accounts of justice and development as well as their relations to Christianity.
