Janhunen divided languages into seven categories, which he called (i) extinct, (ii) moribund or extinct, (iii) moribund, (iv) endangered or moribund, (v) endangered, (vi) potentially endangered, and (vii) not endangered languages. The names of the groups (ii)--(iv) were later adapted to follow those used in the European section:
