research expertise

Having started my academic career in exact sciences, mathematics and computer science, graduating at the University of Turku in 1997, I did my PhD work on logic and natural-language semantics in Theoretical Philosophy at the University of Helsinki in 2001. My post-doctoral projects were on Game-Theoretical Semantics (Funded by the Academy of Finland, 2002-2003); Game Theory and Logic (The Academy of Finland, 2003-2005), Peirce’s Logic and Philosophy (Fulbright Fellowship in 2005) and Cognitive and Pragmatic Theories of Meaning (Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation, 2005). Thereafter, I directed a three-year 'Excellence in Research' project "Peirce's Pragmaticist Philosophy and Its Applications" at the University of Helsinki in 2006-2008.

In 2006-2008 I was University Lecturer in Theoretical Philosophy, in 2008-2009 Full Professor of Theoretical Philosophy (acting), and since 2009 Full Professor of Semiotics at the University of Helsinki. Since 2011 I was appointed Full Professor and Chair in Philosophy at the Tallinn University of Technology. In 2009-2012 I'm a Visiting Professor at Kyung-Hee University, Seoul, Korea, and since 2011 Visiting Professor at the Centre for the Study of Language and Cognition, Zhejiang University, China. In 2011-2012 I'm a visiting fellow at Harvard College Houghton Library. That is to say, year 2011 was relatively busy after having been appointed a professorship at four universities plus another visiting fellowship.

Apart from topics in philosophical logic, I have published journal papers in natural-language semantics and pragmatics, philosophy of mathematics, game theory, American pragmatism, history of analytic philosophy, and phenomenology and cognitive neurosciences. Currently I am running projects on publishing Peirce’s correspondence, studying the systematic history of pragmatism in relation to early analytic philosophy, and investigating diagrammatic logics to the study of reasoning and cognition ("DiaMind: The Diagrammatic Mind").

The Helsinki Peirce Research Centre at the University of Helsinki is devoted to studies on Peirce’s thought and pragmatism. We aim at publishing Peirce's unpublished philosophical and scientific correspondence, for which we received funding in 2005-2009 from the University of Helsinki, the Finnish Cultural Foundation and the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation. Funds are short at present but do contact us if you are interested in doing research on any aspects of Peirce's thought.
