Ahti-Veikko Pietarinen (PhD, University of Helsinki, 2002) is Full Professor of Semiotics at the University of Helsinki, Department of Philosophy, History, Culture and Art Studies, Faculty of Arts, and Full Professor and Chair in Philosophy at the Tallinn University of Technology, Department of Public Administration, Faculty of Social Sciences.

 

Director of the Helsinki Peirce Research Centre at the University of Helsinki, his research interests include Logic, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Science, History of Philosophy, Peirce & Pragmatism, and the Methodology of the Social Sciences. He is also Visiting Professor in the Centre for the Study of Language and Cognition, Zhejiang University, Hangzhou, and in 2010-12 Visiting Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the Kyung Hee University, Seoul.

 

Pietarinen’s recent monograph is Signs of Logic: Peircean Themes on the Philosophy of Language, Games, and Communication (Springer Synthese Library, 2006) and a collection Game Theory and Linguistic Meaning (CRiSPI, Elsevier Science, 2007). His latest journal publications have appeared in the Journal of the History of Ideas, Semiotica, Perspectives on Science, History and Philosophy of Logic, Linguistics and the Human Sciences, Studia Logica, Cognitio, History of Philosophy Quarterly, and Pragmatics & Cognition.

NEWS: For the 2011-2012 academic year Prof. Pietarinen has been selected to receive the Joan Nordell Fellowship, one of eight Visiting Fellowships awarded by Harvard University College's Houghton Library. Houghton Library is the principal rare book and manuscript library of Harvard College, and this prestigious fellowship is awarded each year to allow an outstanding scholar to conduct research in Houghton Library's holdings.
