[At the moment only available in English]
There are approximately two possible reason you have ended up in this page:
Now, that is a tricky question! I am not really sure if there is a greater purpose for the existence of all the stuff here. Originally, I created the first version of my home page simply because I could. Then I got kind of excited about it, and continued experimenting with HTML. The first pieces of so called content were added when I was writing to a student paper and wanted to try out the possibilities of providing some extras in the web, and then it kept expanding to other things. Nowadays the main reason the site is still up is that I am using it to share some information (well, mainly photos) with my friends, and I haven't seen any particular reason to remove the older materials.
Early 1994, the very first version of my home page was created on the Helsinki School of Economics students server. It was a sketch with terrible background graphics, and the site merely consisted of a front page with my personal details (including such important things as my shoe size) and some additional pages with little information, created mainly to see how links to other URLs work.
September 1995, I created a home page for my column on student politics, published in Punakulma student paper. I have left that part of the site almost untouched, so you can still see it in its original form (in Finnish only) here.
Some time in 1997, I came up with the Castles in the air theme. The first version looked quite different from the present layout, and retained the original page structure.
Early 1999, I moved the site to the University of Helsinki server and reorganised the page structure completely (some broken links may still be inherited from that move). The essential parts of present site graphics were introduced at the same time..
August 2001, I had learnt about cascading style sheets, and converted the pages to use css.
September 2003, I was living in Timor-Leste, and wanted to share news and photos with my friends. This motivated me to start using JavaScript for some part of the document code, as I had many new pages to add and I often managed to accidentally remove some tags from the standard part, making the whole page a mess. This led to some minor changes in the page standard layout.
December 2005, I started blogging. I later hacked the blog template so that it looks similar to this site, as I consider the blogs to be part of my castles in the air. The current blog is Itinera mundi mentisque.
August 2006, this info page was finally created! It was supposed to be
part of the restructuring already in 1999, but clicking the link to the info
page got one to a redirection page that said
For long time, the only programme I used to make these pages was Notepad. I have later tried several tools and used HTML-Kit quite a lot and Frontpage to some extent. Yet, sometimes Notepad is still the best!
My original intention was to make produce material in all the languages I know. While it was never meant that all materials be available in all languages, I tried to avoid contributing to the English linguistic imperialism, partly because I believe linguistic pluralism is good, partly because I used to dislike English. I have later started to actually like English, but the bigger reason more and more pages here are in English only is that I am communicating to increasing number of friends whose only common language is English, and I simply haven't got time to make several different versions. However, I do intend to vocationally write in different language also in future.
