Azores: a sanctuary to the Sperm Whales

 

The Azores are one of the best places of the world for the marine mammals. More then 20 species of cetaceans are identified. This richness makes from this islands one authentic nature aquarium, situated in the middle of the Atlantic ocean between America and Europe. The Sperm Whales find here incomparable conditions: one sanctuary. Freed from the pressured of the whalers, taking benefits of the clean waters and abundant food, the Whales remain during every year near the islands. That's why there is an intimate relation between the Azorians and the Sperm Whales. They make a part of the scenery and culture of the small islands. The connection is so ancient so as their people but it's with the arrival of the whaleboats from the North Americas at 200 years that it intensifies. The Azorians learn to be whalers and go on their own equipment. Until 1987 with the death of the last Sperm Whale.
