Fixed term (May-September 2017) research assistant position in Environmental and Ecological statisticsThe position will be filled for the summer 2017 and it will be based in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics in the research group of Assistant Professor Jarno Vanhatalo . The start and end dates are negotiable. The successful candidate is expected to help in group's research projects related to spatial-temporal statistics, computer model emulation, Bayesian optimization and approximate Bayesian computation (ABC). The job will include theoretical and computational work, including programming, on non-parametric (Gaussian process) modeling. The successful candidate should have at least bachelor of science degree, or equivalent knowledge, in statistics, mathematics or computer science. The work requires basic knowledge in Bayesian statistics as well as in computational statistics and machine learning. The research group of Ass. Prof. Vanhatalo is affiliated with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics and the Department of Biosciences in the University of Helsinki. The research areas of the group span from theoretical and computational statistics and machine learning to applied ecology and environmental sciences. The position will be based in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The salary of successful candidate will be based on level 1 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The salary will be approximately 1900 - 2300 €/month.
