My present line of work

My present employer is the University of Helsinki General linguistics department, where I works as (acting) university lecturer of general linguistics during the academic year 2007–2008. My tasks include teaching and research (plus a number of administrative headaches, as the present academic culture seems to require). I teach e.g. introductory linguistics, discourse analysis, and the theory of grammar from different perspectives.

My previous work

Before my present post, I worked as (acting) professor of Finnish at the University of Jyväskylä Department of languages during the academic year  2006–2007. Before that, my employer was the National Graduate School for Language Studies, Langnet, where I worked as a (research) coordinator. In practice, that meant doing just about anything; mostly, it consisted of administrative things, planning post-doc courses and other things, as well as doing my own research, but additionally, I got to do virtually anything one can imagine.

I spent the years 1997–1998 by working as a research assistant in the research project "Description of Morphosyntax in the Cognitive Grammar of Finnish", funded by the Academy of Finland, at the  University of Helsinki Finnish department. My closest colleagues were the other two research assistants of the same project, Lari Kotilainen and Maija Vilkkumaa; the leader-in-charge of the project was prof. Pentti Leino. After I left the project (to become a node in the Langnet), the project also included PhD Ilona Herlin and a few more research assistants, Suvi Honkanen, Laura Visapää, and Laura Vesa. I was also involved in the project myself practically until its end (December 1999), perhaps just out of love to the discipline. Or maybe because I can't seem to (and neither do I want to) leave things unfinished.

After that, the years 2000–2002, I was similarly involved with the Academy-funded project "roots of contemporary Finnish: recent history of the Finnish infinitive verb form constructions". This new project included all the staff of the previous one, with the exception of Laura Vesa and with the addition of Aki Ontermaa, and at the final stages, Heli Pekkarinen.

My actual job from the beginning of 1999 until mid-2002 was being a PhD student in the National Graduate School for Language Studies, Langnet, and thereby writing my PhD thesis. The thesis was completed and publicly inspected on January 17, 2003. The last months of 2002 I worked at the University of Helsinki Finnish department as a computer-flavored researcher. My main task in that job was to know at least something about computerized collections of language data (corpora), and to tell other researchers of Finnish about them and their usage. My current work as coordinator started in the beginning of the year 2003 and will continue until the end of the year 2006.
