Intellectual Heritage of the Ancient Near East

Inka Nokso-Koivisto

Inka Nokso-Koivisto prepares her doctoral dissertation on the idea of human being as a microcosm in Islamic thought. The microcosm-macrocosm analogy is extensively developed in the Near Eastern intellectual tradition and, in its Islamic forms, is influenced by earlier philosophical and mythological sources.

Nokso-Koivisto studies the development of the idea as a part of the idea of human being. She examines the ways in which it has been connected with epistemological, cosmological and anthropological views. Her corpus consists of Isma’ili, Sufi and Hermetic texts from the 9th to the 13th centuries.
