International contacts solidified
The University of Helsinki focused concentrated efforts in 2008 on the recruitment and reception services for international students and teachers through developing the operations within the organisation and through closer co-operation with other higher education institutions in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. The accommodation arrangements of visiting lecturers was one of the special development targets. The number of English-language Master’s programmes has been increased and in the near future their number will reach 30.
The university strengthened existing co-operation and signed new agreements with foreign universities. The university sent a delegation to the Confucius Institutes Conference held in Beijing, and the Confucius Institute at the University of Helsinki will host an academic delegation from China. The University of Helsinki consolidated, in co-operation with other higher education institutions in the Helsinki Metropolitan Area, its relations with several universities in the Middle East.
The Institute for Molecular Medicine Finland (FIMM) is a significant internationalisation project headed by the University of Helsinki, and it involves, for example, the recently established National Institute for Health and Welfare and the Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa. Agreements were signed with the first international groups recruited at FIMM, and they moved into laboratories at the new Biomedicum 2 on Meilahti campus.
Internationalisation is one of the strategic key development targets for the university. International affairs are integrally linked with all basic operations of the university, and their management is carried out on three levels: teaching, research and social interaction. The number of international members of the university community continues to grow.
