VITRI celebrates 25th anniversary

At the beginning of the year, the Viikki Tropical Resources Institute, VITRI, celebrated its 25th anniversary. Established in 1980 at the Department of Forest Ecology, University of Helsinki, the Institute studies tropical silviculture and related issues as well as issues pertaining to developing countries and the environment.

At the moment, VITRI is engaged in research co-operation in diverse projects in, for instance, China, Sudan and Costa Rica. The most important research areas are conservation and modelling of biodiversity in tropical forests, the communal management of forests and trees, and the ecology of natural forest rehabilitation and succession, women as natural resource managers and plantation forestry.

Since its inception, the Institute has been headed by Professor Olavi Luukkanen. In October, Professor Luukkanen received a medal of honour from the President of Sudan in recognition of his contribution to the development and research of Sudanese forests and the teaching of Sudanese forest researchers. Luukkanen was moreover commended for his work in promoting co-operation between Finland and Sudan.
