Kari Alitalo received recognition for his work

In March 2005, the Swedish Erik K. Fernström Foundation presented a prestigious Nordic medical award to Academy Professor Kari Alitalo for his contribution to the research on blood and lymphatic vessels. The Stora Fernströmpriset is worth one million Swedish crowns.

Academy Professor Alitalo's research has in recent years focused particularly on the growth factors of blood and lymphatic vessels. Among other things, the research aims at developing new cancer medication. The research group led by Alitalo operates in Biomedicum Helsinki as part of the Molecular and Cancer Biology Research Programme in the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Helsinki. Alitalo also heads the Academy of Finland Centre of Excellence on Molecular Cancer Biology.

The Erik K. Fernström Foundation operates under the auspices of the Faculty of Medicine of the Lund University. The Foundation awards the Stora Fernströmpriset prize annually to a distinguished Nordic scholar.
