 established in Turku 1640, moved to Helsinki in1828
 main tasks: research, teaching and societal interaction
 bilingual (Finnish and Swedish), tuition also provided in English
 11 faculties
 38,000 degree students, 60,000 continuing education and Open University students
 7,500 employees, of whom 3,600 are researchers and teachers
 operates on four campuses in Helsinki and 20 other locations throughout Finland
 aims to establish its position as one of the leading multidisciplinary research universities in Europe

Three new faculties were established: Pharmacy, Biosciences and Behavioural Sciences.

An advisory board was appointed to each University campus

150th anniversary of the Department of Geology

80th anniversary of Speech Studies

40th anniversary of Kilpisjärvi Biological Station

Exactum building was completed in Kumpula

The new building for veterinary medicine and food technology was inaugurated in Viikki

The construction of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital began in Viikki

The architectural competition for the new Swedish School of Social Science building was completed

Helsinki Institute of Science and Technology Studies was established

The University hosted the International Congress on Limnology in Lahti

The degree structure reform continued, and the evaluations of research and administration started
