University of Helsinki - A Leading European University

The University of Helsinki is one of the best multidisciplinary research universities in the world. The high-quality research carried out by the university creates new knowledge for educating diverse specialists in various fields, and for utilisation in social decision-making and the business sector.

The university operates on four campuses in Helsinki and 17 other locations throughout Finland.

Founded in 1640, the University of Helsinki wants to strengthen its position among the world's leading multidisciplinary research universities and to actively promote the well-being of humanity and a fair society.

From the beginning of 2010, a new era for the university began. The number of departments at the university was reduced to 24 and the Faculty of Biosciences was changed into the Faculty of Biological and Environmental Sciences. In September 2009, the University of Helsinki was appointed its first Board and several officials and bodies were elected and appointed as required by the new Universities Act. In Finland in general, a number of universities and higher education institutions merged and formed new universities.
