Teema-alue III
Sosiaaliset muutokset ja ympäristökysymykset -teema-alue perehdyttää opiskelijan keskeisiin Venäjän, entisen Neuvostoliiton ja itäisen Keski-Euroopan maiden yhteiskuntia ja ympäristöä käsitteleviin aiheisiin. Teeman opintojaksot käsittelevät näiden maiden ymmärtämisen kannalta keskeisiä aiheita tarkastellen järjestelmämuutosta ja sen sosiaalisia seurauksia, neuvostoperinnön jälkiä nyky-yhteiskunnissa sekä Euroopan unionin laajentumisen seurauksia yhteiskuntakehitykselle. Sosiaalisten ja ympäristökysymyksien lisäksi teema-alueeseen kuuluvat terveyden ja hyvinvoinnin tila kohdealueella.
Oppimistavoitteet: Teemaan perehtynyt opiskelija tuntee aihealuetta koskevat peruskäsitteet ja tuntee sitä koskevan nykytutkimuksen keskustelut. Opiskelija kykenee kontekstualisoimaan Venäjää – ja/tai suuntautumisensa mukaan myös muita entisiä valtiososialistisia maita – koskevaa tietoa sekä historiallisesti että vertailevassa perspektiivissä. Lisäksi opiskelija tunnistaa kohdealueen sisäisen heterogeenisyyden ja kommunismin romahduksen jälkeiset maittain eriytyneet kehityskulut.
Teema-alueeseen perehtynyt opiskelija voi hyödyntää asiantuntemustaan esimerkiksi julkisen hallinnon, kansalaisjärjestöjen ja kansainvälisten järjestöjen yhteistyössä Venäjän, entisen Neuvostoliiton, itäisen Euroopan ja EU:n uusien jäsenmaiden kanssa, liike-elämässä maiden sisäisen toimintalogiikan ymmärtämistä vaativissa tehtävissä sekä akateemisen tutkimuksen perustana. Teema-alueen opiskelijalla on välineet saada ajankohtaista tietoa eri tahoilta ja kykyä analysoida sitä laajemmassa kontekstissa.

6 day intensive study excursion, involving lectures (6h) and visits to enterprises, and a written excursion diary (2 credits). Before departure, 5 seminars (10h) will be held to prepare students for the excursion. |
Aim |
To give students a first-hand experience of Russian society in transition. Upon completion, students will have a better grasp of Russian realities and will appreciate the very great changes that Russian society has already made along the road of transition. |
Content |
In early December, students have the opportunity to participate in a study excursion to St. Petersburg, the largest city on the Baltic Sea and Finland’s close neighbour. Through a guided visit to Russia’s once imperial capital, students will discover for themselves the true nature of the world’s ‘second superpower’. Lectures will be given on various contemporary issues that focus on the Russian transition, provided by the UEF’s partners in St. Petersburg academic institutions. Moreover, visits to selected Russian enterprises will be offered to introduce students to the ‘new Russia’. The costs of the excursion are fully borne by participants. |

Multidisciplinary Dialogue - The First Joint Summer School organized by Finnish-Russian Cross BorderUniversities, provides a unique opportunity for students and professionals in wellbeing, technology andenvironment to explore the multidisciplinary dialogue and conversations from a global perspective. The Summer School is divided into five sessions where the themes will be discussed in cross-disciplinaryay. The program includes keynote lectures, workshops, discussions and PhD and Master students have an excellent possibility to introduce their research by giving oral or poster presentations. The topics of each day have been decided, but at the moment the list of keynote speakers is partly tentative and to beconfirmed separately. | Aims | To give theoretical and practical knowledge to students of the urban development concerning the urban areas on Baltic Sea realm. After the course students understand the special features of urban development around the Baltic Sea countries. The course gives the basic information of theoretical issues concerning the urban studies generally. The practical examples come from the cities of Baltic Sea realm and are connected to theoretical framework. The students will learn the development of Baltic Sea area cities dealing with problematic and planning oriented approaches |

The countries around the Baltic Sea rim are witnessing a rapid change in their regional and demographic structure. Change manifests itself as a strong tendency towards continuing urbanization and changes in the internal structures of cities. The reasons for change vary from one country to another, but the underlying problems and consequences are universal in the Baltic Sea area. |

This course explores the transformation of the welfare state and experiences of subjective wellbeing in contemporary Russia. It discusses the basic features and institutions of the welfare system, health and social policy, social work, and people’s everyday experiences of wellbeing and engagement with welfare institutions. Aim |
The general aim of the course is to provide students with the tools to examine social change in Russia and East Central European Countries after the collapse of the socialist system. The sudden shift away from the communist party system and planned economy was a painful one for the people living in Russia and Eastern Europe in the 1990s. With the disintegration of the Soviet Union hopes were running high that a multi party system, democracy, free market economy, decent social security, respect for human rights and gender equality would make their swift entrance in society. Reality however shows that a part of these hopes were not fulfilled. How can we explain social changes in these societies? After completing this course, students will be able to recognize the importance of the Soviet legacy and the role of contemporary ideologies, ideas and new driving forces behind social change. In addition students will learn to distinguish the specificities of social change in each country in contrast to the common social changes in the region as a whole. In this sense the course aims to compare change in different former socialist countries through which students will learn to analyze and recognize social changes in their own societies. |
Content |
In this course we discuss the larger changes in Russian and East Central European societies at the end of the socialist period. We will primarily focus upon Russia, but other former socialist countries will get thorough attention. Special themes in this course are, among others: the growing social inequality in society, gender, the development of civil society, changes in economy, the development of an independent media, the implementation of a welfare system, and changes in everyday life and family ties. But this course will also examine how these societies dealt with the past by looking at how collective memory is constructed and how history is controlled. |

Tavoite |
Ympäristö, hyvinvointi ja terveys johdantokurssi vastaa tämän päivän akuutteihin terveyden, ympäristön ja hyvinvoinnin kysymyksiin käsittelemällä Venäjää ja itäistä Eurooppaa vastakohtien avulla. Kurssilaiset perehtyvät nykyajan haasteisiin Venäjällä ja itäisessä Euroopassa lukemalla erilaisia materiaaleja ja osallistumalla asiantuntijoiden johtamiin keskusteluihin. Kurssin jälkeen opiskelijalla on vahva pohja arvioida aiheeseen liittyviä asioita myös muissa opinnoissa ja työelämässä. |

| Tavoite | Kurssin tarkoitus on johdattaa opiskelijat materiaalisen kulttuurin mekanismeihin ja rakenteisiin Neuvostoliitossa ja Venäjällä. Kurssilla käsitellään tavaran tuotantoon ja jakeluun, arkipäivän kuluttamiseen ja kuluttamisen kulttuuriin liittyviä aiheita. Luentojen aiheet pyrkivät valottamaan tärkeitä sekä neuvostoyhteiskuntaan liitettyjä historiallisia että nyky-Venäjään liittyviä kehityskulkuja kuluttamisen ja kulutuskulttuurin näkökulmasta. Näiden näkökulmien kautta voi myös käsitellä monia Venäjän talouskehitykseen ja kulttuuriin liitettyjä kliseitä kuten varjotalous, jonotuskulttuuri ja oligarkit, ja päästä sisälle siihen, mitä nk. jokapäiväinen elämä erilaisissa yhteiskuntajärjestelmissä mahtaa olla. Kurssin aikana opiskelijat saavat yleiskuvan Puolan toisen maailmansodan jälkeisen historian tapahtumista. Rakenteellisia muutoksia tarkastellaan kulutuskulttuurin ja sen muutosten näkökulmasta ja pohditaan siihen vaikuttaneita tekijöitä. Kurssilla tarkastellaan erilaisten kulutushistorian narratiivien vaikutusta käsitykseemme menneisyydestä. |
| Sisältö | Kurssi koostuu ennakkotehtävistä, yhdestä lähiopetuspäivästä sekä neljästä viikon mittaisesta verkkotyöskentelyjaksosta. Verkkotyöskentely sisältää luettavia tekstejä, lyhyitä kirjoitustehtäviä ja verkkokeskustelua johon kaikki osallistuvat. Kurssi arvostellaan osallistumisaktiivisuuden ja kirjallisten tehtävien perusteella. Kurssin voi suorittaa 3 op:n laajuisena (kurssi) tai 5 op:n laajuisena (kurssi + 15 sivun essee/opintopäiväkirja). | Sisältö | The lectures analyze older and recent history from Soviet Union and Russia, and compare post-Soviet transition in Russia and Eastern Europe, discusses such topics as the consequences of global food crises in Russia, role of small entrepreneurship in Russia, socio-economic development in Russian Karelia and some other regions, governance, and oppoortunities for social innovations in Russia. Lecturing material is based, in addition to literature, on the lecturers' field research in Russia 2001-12. |
