The aim is to complete a first degree (BA) in three years and a second degree (MA) in a further two years. Major students complete the Basic Studies module (perusopinnot) during their first year. The Intermediate Studies module (aineopinnot; also known in English as Subject Studies) is normally embarked upon in the spring semester of the first year, and should be completed by the end of the third year. The Basic Studies must be completed before starting the proseminar. The Intermediate Studies module includes a period of study in Russia towards the end of the second year.

The Advanced Studies are completed during the fourth and the fifth year. The Advanced Studies module includes a seminar, which cannot be started before completion of the proseminar. The student can choose to exceed the minimum number of credits required for Intermediate Studies and Advanced Studies.
