Welcome to the site for Russian Language and Literature!

The Finns are widely recognized in the world as experts on various aspects of Russia — an economic and cultural superpower whose importance on the global stage is unlikely to diminish. Students of Russian Language and Literature at Helsinki University acquire a profound knowledge of the Russian language and a thorough familiarity with Russian culture. This equips them for a variety of demanding jobs in both the public and the private sector. Apart from private companies, graduates in Russian work for various ministries, libraries, associations, international organizations, and the media. Teaching Russian is another career option. Students can diversify their profile by choosing minor subjects in fields that might include economics, social sciences, or other arts subjects. There are separate degree requirements for native speakers of Russian and for those studying Russian as a foreign language.

The high quality of teaching and research in the subject has received independent recognition on several occasions. While Russian Language and Literature was by far the largest subject within the Slavonic and Baltic Department (until the end of 2009), the department was twice designated as a national centre of excellence in university education. In the 2006 research assessment exercise, the department received the highest possible grade. Our teachers are regularly consulted by the media as leading experts in their field; they also frequently give public lectures, and have written a number of textbooks in Russian language and culture.
