Research Interests

Medieval translation and language contact, Latin influence on Old English syntax, history of English, historical sociolinguistics, corpus studies

My current research springs from my PhD dissertation “Non-finite constructions in Old English: with special reference to syntactic borrowing from Latin,” defended at University of Helsinki. In my thesis, I studied several infinitival and participial constructions that were used in Old English in imitation of Latin. I chiefly concentrated on the linguistic comparison of Latin texts against their Old English translations and original Old English texts produced between the late 9th and early 11th centuries. Now, as this research is completed, I am investigating more closely the sociolinguistic situation of language contact in medieval England in the Old English period (7th–11th centuries).

I am also the head of the new corpus project Medieval Latin from Anglo-Saxon Sources, which is being compiled at VARIENG in collaboration with Dr. Matti Kilpiö (University of Helsinki), Dr. David Howlett (Medieval Latin Dictionary, University of Oxford), Dr. Michael Lapidge, (University of Cambridge), and Dr. Philipp Roelli (University of Zurich).
