Research Interests
I am currently working on my PhD thesis, which is a digital online edition of manuscript O.1.77, located at Trinity College Cambridge. The edition will include the MS O.1.77 in all, giving equal attention to Middle English and Latin texts in the codex, which will make it the first digital edition to fully represent the multilingual aspects of late Mediaeval scientific and utilitarian manuscripts.
O.1.77 is a late Middle English pocket-sized medical handbook, and dates 1460, or slightly earlier, in London or Westminster. The manuscript contains c. 15 medical texts, in English and Latin, on a variety of subjects, ranging from uroscopies, to plague treatises, alchemical texts and astrological charts.
The technical side of my digital editions is being developed as a part of the Digital Editions for Corpus Linguistics (DECL) project. DECL focuses on developing online editions of historical manuscripts that combine detailed description of manuscripts with search tools developed for linguistic computing.
I also participate in the Scientific Thought Styles project, and have been part of the editorial team for the Hel-lex 2 Conference Proceedings published by the Cascadilla Proceedings Project in 2009.
Current Research
In 2009, I have been mainly focusing on digital mark-up, and improving my computing skills. I gave a poster of encoding abbreviations in TEI-conformant XML in Digital Humanities 2009 conference in Maryland, 22 to 25 June, and participated in a workshop on digital editing in the Leeds International Medieval Congress 2009 on 13 to 16 July.
