An Electronic Text Edition of Depositions 1560-1760 (ETED) makes available a substantial number of Early Modern English depositions transcribed from manuscripts dating from the period 1560´-1760. ETED offers a “linguistic” edition of manuscript material from a genre that has attracted increasing scholarly interest and yet has been hitherto relatively inaccessible to researchers.
Archives and other repositories throughout England preserve a vast number of witness depositions from the early modern period. As written records of oral statements made by witnesses, plaintiffs or defendants in connection with court cases, these depositions provide us with glimpses into everyday life and language of the period as well as into the dealings and procedures of various courts.
