I am primarily an ecologist and conservation biologist, and my research work focuses on insect-plant assemblages of meadow habitats. Earlier I worked primarily with carabid beetles, and this taxon also plays a major role in my meadow research.

I have also participated in a number of EU funded and other international multidisciplinary research projects on urban green space systems. Since 2006 I have coordinated the Helsinki Meadows Project and I also conduct research in the Finnish Academy funded research project
Greenenhance: Enhancing urban biodiversity: habitat planning and strategic management of urban green areas.

My teaching responsibilities include the course Workshops in Conservation Biology, and courses and courses on urban ecology and urban green space systems. I am also interested in the development of university teaching and have completed studies on university pedagogy.

I am a member of the Society of Conservation Biology’s (European division) Education Committee. Furthermore I am strongly involved in the application of web-based teaching, having previously worked as planner of e-Learning for the Faculties of Biosciences and Pharmacy at the University Helsinki. Through this interest in e-Learning, I have also been an active participant in national congresses on blended learning.
