What do the students say?

See below a figure on grades (mean ± SD) the students gave to some of the courses run in MURE.

grades

Urban Ecosystem Ecology (Sept-Oct 2010)

"Very interesting, topics highly relevant, examples good, both lecturers managed to get the students involved."

"The course gave a good overview on urban ecology, especially on the types of research that is being conducted in cities."

"Very good lectures, but the course seemed to be little bit short. Interesting topics."

Environmental Protection (Oct-Dec 2010)

"Really enjoyed this class, good info, I enjoy history of the environment. This course combined both."

"An interesting course as a whole, but perhaps too much emphasis on history."

"Excellent! the course as a whole was excellent due to the fact that I could gain the knowledge from history, technology, economy associated with the urban area."

Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology (Nov-Dec 2010)

"The course was excellent because it covered the basic features of ecotoxicology and the contaminations of chemicals in the Urban area."

"The course was very interesting and have given a wide perspective of the issues related to ecotoxicology, human health and environment protection."

"The Moodle debates were very useful in expanding the horizons. However, I would like to have more contact teaching - despite of the fact that learning material in the Moodle was excellent."

Urban Environmental Transition (Jan-Feb 2011)

"Very interesting material, topical, relevant and important."

"I love the fact that the lecturer is capable of telling a great story without undermining any of the scientific substance and value."

Hydrology and Water Reserves (Jan-Feb 2011)

"It had much information and great lecturers."

"The course was excellent and we could learn various processes of hydrological cycle and also about various pollutants in urban hydrology."

"It really worked and offered many aspects from different lecturers. But too many lecturers become a problem." Our reply: We're working on it!!

Landscape Ecology (Feb-Apr 2011)

"The course was excellent for urban environment studies. The role of landscape ecology in the urban context was taught with explicit examples."

"Yes, but I would like to have more GIS-related lessons." Our reply: We're working on it. Perhaps we'll try to develop a hands-on GIS course.

"Too many different lecturers." Our reply: We're thinking of decreasing the number of lecturers and splitting the course into a more theoretical Landscape Ecology course and a more practical GIS course.

Field Course in Urban Environmental Issues (Mar-May 2011)

"A very interesting insight into urban studies and today's issues, such as green roofs and urban constructed wetlands. The dog poo effect on nutrient cycles was interesting as the amount of dogs is constantly growing. Also the visit by Joiku the dog was a nice surprise."

"It actually exceeded my expectations since the exercises had such a big practical meaning in how urbanization really affects the environment. The theories that we dealt with during the year were now handled in practice."

"This course was not only useful, it was also extremely fun! I mean how often do you get to bury tea bags in the center of a city, to cause common confusion and laugh at people’s faces, and spread dog poo and crushed charcoal on a lawn? Not very many can say to have done that!"

"Great exercises, great teachers, great enthusiasm in both students and teachers."

"Due to a hectic schedule towards the end of the course, the learning process efficiency might have diminished a little." Our reply: Perhaps we'll decrease the number of field experiments next time around!

Environmental Management and Economics (Apr 2011) (Grade = 4.6, n = 5)

"The course was excellent because it covered the important aspect of business keeping environmental issues into the consideration. Excellent teacher."

"Topic of the course was not very interesting before this course but excellent lecturer made it very interesting."

"We could have more days and lectures so that we could have learnt even more about environmental economics."

History of Urbanisation and Urban Ecology (Oct-Dec 2011)

"I really enjoyed the course because of the variety of subjects treated"

"Good to have the course on Moodle, group work was very successful; I really enjoyed the opponents questions. Maybe I could be better with more active participation from students: teachers should ask more questions."

Environmental Ethics (Oct-Nov 2011)

"Very interesting discussions and a teacher that knew what he was talking about."

"The course had an interesting topic, good overall framing, nice group size. I appreciated the approach of ethics combined to practical political, economic, social & environmental issues."

"I expected maybe more things about nature, animals, the power of humans upon nature and so on..."
