Snow and ice are beautiful to look at, but they are also an important subject
of geophysical research. Snow samples studied at the University of Helsinki come
from Finnish forests and lakes, and from as far away as the Antarctic.

Children's university
The future is in the children, even for a university. That is why the University
of Helsinki offers a wide range of activities for children and young people. The
most popular destination is probably the Finnish Museum of Natural History. In
2002, the museum received no less than 314 kindergarten groups.

The museum is finally open!
Museum activities serving the needs of both teaching and research have been
part of the operations of the University of Helsinki since the beginning. Previously
scattered around the city, the collections are now gathered under one roof in
the Helsinki University Museum in the Arppeanum building. Right in the historical
centre of the city, a stone's throw from Senate Square, Arppeanum is the oldest
building in Finland that was also originally intended as a museum.
