Finnish Centre of Excellence in the Philosophy of Social Science
TINT wins promotion to
Finnish Centre of Excellence in the Philosophy of Social Science
On 6 June 2011, the Academy of Finland granted the Helsinki Philosophy of Science group the status of Centre of Excellence (CoE).
The CoE status represents the recognition that TINT, together with the rest of the Helsinki Philosophy of Science community, conducts cutting edge research that meets the standards for highest quality scientific work in its field. The six-year Centre of Excellence nomination guarantees that the TINT group will continue to function as a tight-knit unit and will be able to attract further resources so as to expand its activities and to produce even more remarkable results. The ambition of the CoE is to produce practically relevant philosophy of social science with a focus on issues of interdisciplinarity.
Academy of Finland: Centres of Excellence – Spearheading science
Huippuyksiköt - tieteen kärjet
TINT is an interdisciplinary and international endeavour sponsored by the Academy of Finland. It deals with issues of unity and disunity in and around the social sciences considered in their contemporary context. Important interdisciplinary encounters are taking place between the social sciences, as well as between the social sciences and the cognitive and biological sciences. These interactions and transformations are not smooth and uniform, they rather involve tensions and conflicting tendencies towards both integration and disintegration. The ambition of TINT is to look into these tendencies and tensions from the point of view of the philosophy and social studies of science, employing concepts such as model, explanation, mechanism, and unification. Special attention is paid to economics as a major player in these developments, both as an exporter and importer of ideas.
