Who can apply?

Postgraduate degrees include the Licentiate of Theology, Doctor of Theology and Doctor of Philosophy.

Applicants must hold a university degree roughly comparable to the Finnish Master of Theology degree. When applying for the Doctor of Philosophy degree, the required degree is a Master of Arts or an equivalent degree in a field close to Theology. The basic requirement is that the degree must have been completed at a university-level institution.

The Faculty carefully examines the content and scope of the completed degree: special emphasis is given to the thesis, which should be comparable to the Finnish Master’s thesis in its content, scope and quality.

If the applicant’s basic degree has been completed at another university or in a subject other than what he or she is applying for, the Faculty may at its discretion require the student to complete complementary studies worth a maximum of 60 credits. These complementary studies have to be completed by the time that the Postgraduate Admissions Board makes its decision on the right to study. The relevant department will confirm the amount of required complementary studies that the student has to complete in order to be eligible to apply.
