The Faculty in brief

The tasks of the Faculty of Theology include research and research-based undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education. In addition, the Faculty participates in social debate and completes tasks requiring theological expertise both in Finland and within the international community.
All theological disciplines are represented in the Faculty, including church history, biblical studies, systematic theology, practical theology and comparative religion. Also operating in the Faculty is the Catherine Institute which conducts and promotes research on religious life in Russia and Eastern Europe, the Byzantine cultural heritage and the Orthodox tradition.
The Faculty of Theology has provided higher education in theology since the establishment of the University in 1640. Today it is among the largest theological faculties in the world. The Faculty has about 1,700 undergraduate students and 300 postgraduate students. Many Faculty graduates are employed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Finland. Some become teachers in comprehensive or upper secondary schools, while yet others find employment in academia, the media or other sectors of society.
