Cultural Programme and Attractions
These pages include information about the evening programme of IOSOT, Congress Excursions and Congress Dinner, as well as information about attractions in Helsinki and its environs.
Things to do in Helsinki and the neighbourhood
Helsinki has a great deal to offer when planning social programme and leisure activities for congress delegates. Sightseeing tours are varied and plentiful. Some of the most popular sights are the neo-classical-style Senate Square, the Church in the Rock, which has been carved out of solid granite, and the historical Suomenlinna fortress island. A wide range of museums, art galleries and handicraft shops as well as outdoor cafés add to the possibilities for a varied programme.
Whole-day excursions offer excellent possibilities to visit the countryside and experience the peace and quiet of Finnish nature. There are many attractive destinations only within an hour's drive from the capital, for example the small town of Porvoo with its old section of wooden houses and its medieval Cathedral.
In August the day-time temperature is generally around +20 ºC, and the weather is mostly sunny with only occasional rainy days.
Opportunities for pre- and post-congress tours are excellent. Visits to Finnish Lapland, the Lake District, the Åland Islands or the neighbouring foreign cities of Stockholm, Tallinn and St. Petersburg are particular favourites.
