In case the student’s background degree is other than a Bachelor of Education degree, it is required that he/she has passed the basic and intermediate studies of education with the minimum grade of 3/5 or with the grade “good”.

The background degree together, with the Master’s Degree Programme in Early Childhood Education, forms the Master of Education (Early Childhood Education) Degree of 300 ECTS credits. The extent of the actual Master’s Degree Programme in Early Childhood Education is 120 ECTS credits. The degree includes 80 ECTS credits of advanced studies in Education, in particular, Early Childhood Education, 5 ECTS credits of orientation studies and 35 ECTS credits of minor subject and elective studies. The studies include a three-month placement period.

From 1 August 2010 on, it is possible to complete teacher’s pedagogical studies (60 ECTS) as a part of Master of Education degree. Completion of the studies provides the students with a versatile teacher’s qualification.

Of the overall teacher’s pedagogical studies (60 ECTS), 35 ECTS credits are included in the Bachelor of Education degree in Kindergarten Teacher Education or Multicultural Kindergarten Teacher Education and 25 ECTS credits in studies in the Master's Degree Programme in Early Childhood Education. Participation in teacher’s pedagogical studies during one’s master degree studies requires that the student has successfully completed his/her Bachelor of Education (kindergarten teacher) degree at the University of Helsinki in accordance with the Government Decree on University Degrees (794/2004). In case the student’s background degree required for the right to apply to the master’s degree programme is something other than the aforementioned degree, the student may attain the competence granted by teacher's pedagogical studies (60 ECTS) as a part of his/her master's degree by completing, at maximum, the 60 ECTS credits of additional studies required for the qualification.
