Studies in the Programme

Home Economics Teacher education
Students in Home Economics Teacher education complete a Bachelor of Arts (Education) degree (180 ECTS) and Master of Arts (Education) degree (120 ECTS). The major subject alternatives in the degree are Home Economics and Education. Home Economics studies include 120 ECTS credits of studies in the subject to be taught, i.e. Home Economics. Studies in Education include the teachers’ pedagogical studies of 60 ECTS credits required for a teacher’s qualification. Both major subject options entail intermediate studies for general upper secondary qualification as decreed. Qualification for postgraduate studies is granted in accordance with the major subject either in Home Economics or Education.

Home Economics education
Students in Home Economics education complete a Bachelor of Arts (Education) degree (180 ECTS) and Master of Arts (Education) degree (120 ECTS). These degrees do not qualify for a teacher’s profession. Postgraduate study qualifications are granted in Home Economics.

Extension studies: People with a college or polytechnic level teacher’s qualification in the fields of home economics or institutional household economics, or with an earlier Home Economics Teacher degree can also apply for Home Economics Teacher education.  Eligible for application are also those with the above qualifications, whose degrees include separate vocational teachers’ pedagogical studies. There is an annual quota of 10 places reserved for these students. A personal study plan will be drawn up for each student following which the Bachelor of Arts (Education) degree can be completed in approximately 3 to 5 years.

Home Economics as a minor subject or non-degree studies
People other than major subject students in the Home Economics Teacher education can apply for the right to pursue 25, 60 or 90 ECTS credits of Home Economics as a minor subject or non-degree studies. Entrance examination for the studies is organised once a year, usually in June.
