Department of Teacher Education

The Department of Teacher Education at the University of Helsinki is one of the leading European units providing teacher education and engaging in education research. Its primary aim is to educate teachers and experts for the needs of the Finnish society. At the same time, the research done under the auspices of the department also benefits the field of education internationally.

The history of the department dates back to 1974, when teacher education was introduced as an academic discipline in universities. A Department of Teacher Education was established in the University of Helsinki and it grew to be one of the largest departments of the university in the 1990s.
The Department of Teacher Education actively interacts with the surrounding society. The department aims to profile its teaching and research in such a way that they can continue to meet the current needs of society.

The Department of Teacher Education is also internationally attractive. Finland’s success in PISA surveys continues to bring numerous international visitor groups to the department every year to acquaint themselves with Finnish teacher education. Moreover, researchers, teachers and students are encouraged to internationalise through various exchange programmes.
