The Department fo Finnish, Finno-Ugrian and Scandinavian Studies is responsible for the Finnish language teaching for all the International Students of the University of Helsinki.
Our Finnish
language courses are only for (exchange) students enrolled at the University of Helsinki and no study right is granted to pursueing non-graduate studies. Finnish is being taught in Helsinki for instance at the Language Services of the University of Helsinki, the Adult Education Centre, the Summer University and several private institutions too.
If you have started your studies in Helsinki University before 1.8.2011, you might have compulsary Finnish courses in your degree requirements. In that case please contact our office.
The Department offers three different types of Finnish language courses
Beginners' for Master’s Students (esp. English Master’s Programmes) and graduate Students
The courses are specifically designed for students in English Master's Programmes - no previous Finnish studies required. Contact lessons are being held only once a week and the courses require a lot of independent group work.

City Centre Campus
Exchange Students
These courses are primarily for those exchange students who are staying at the University of Helsinki for 1-2 semesters only. NOTE: if you major is Finnish langauge and culture you can participate in the Finnish Language and Culture programme's courses.

Degree Students - Intensive courses
The Finninsh language intensive courses are particularly intended for the degree students who have compulsory Finnish language studies in their degree. These courses can also be completed by participating in the 15 / 25 sp exams. Other bachelor's, master's and graduate students whose aim is to improve their Finnish language skills are also welcome to attend these courses.
The courses are divided into basic courses (1-4) and continuation courses (1-3).
