Taxation policy

If you work in Finland, you have to pay taxes on your income. The taxation policy depends on how long you stay in Finland - less than six months or over six months - and on the type of your employment. International tax agreements sometimes allow tax deductions for students. In most cases, you can get deduction only if your work in Finland is directly related to your studies at home.

Check the Finnish Tax Administration's Web site for details.

Tax Card

On taking employment in Finland, foreigners who reside in Finland for more than 6 months must request a tax card (verokortti) from a tax office. The original tax card should then be presented to their employer so that tax can be withheld.

When applying for a tax card you need to give an estimate of how much you will earn in the calendar year (January to December), so that the tax office can assign you a tax percentage. You will also need the Finnish social security number that can be obtained from local register offices (maistraatti).
