Other student organisations
Within the Student Union (HYY) there are some 250 sub-organisations, faculty and department clubs, interst groups and clubs, the Student Nations, etc.
Faculty and department clubs will introduce you to the students and their interests in your own field of study. There are many clubs or interest groups that focus on a particular activity, such as games, poetry, folk dancing, wine tasting, films, politics, and many, many more. If you enjoy singing, sports, or the theatre, you will find many choirs, orchestras, sports clubs, and theatre groups you can join in. Or maybe you'd like to try something entirely new? There are almost endless possibilities – and there's room for everyone.
Student Nations
The Student Nations are among the oldest organisations in Finland. Even if affiliated to the University, they – according to the Universities Act – enjoy autonomical status in their own affairs. There are fifteen student nations within HYY and the University. Four of them are Swedish-speaking. Thousands of students enjoy the benefits the Student Nation memberhip gives them.
Originally, the Student Nations were founded for communities coming from various parts of Finland. The idea was to bring together students with the same geographical background and thus to ease up students' integration into the unfamiliar city and university life. However, nowadays the idea of membership based on regional origin is interpreted very loosely: today, all nations are open to any student interested in their activities and clubs. International students are welcome!
