Language of studies

Finnish and Swedish

The University of Helsinki is a bilingual institution of higher learning. The languages of instruction are Finnish and Swedish. Finnish is the main language of instruction, whereas Swedish is used in a limited number of degree programmes and major subjects. The Swedish School of Social Science under the Faculty of Social Sciences gives all education, i.e. Bachelor's level courses, in Swedish.

Throughout the University, the Finnish and Swedish speaking students can take their examinations and write their examinations and course papers in their own language.

Instruction in English

The faculties and departments provide more and more courses taught in English for graduate students. The International Master's programmes are, of course, international by nature - and all taught fully in English. In addition to special programmes, a growing number of seminars and lecture series are offered in English on a regular basis, particularly at the Master's level. Of the undergraduate programmes, only the English philology major is available fully in English.

At the Master's level, even when instruction in English is not available, it is often possible to complete courses through independent study. Many departments accept examinations written in English.
