Grading
Reformed grading system
In connection with the reform of the degree system, the diverse grading systems used over the years were harmonised at undergraduate and graduate levels. The University of Helsinki has adopted a universal six-level grading scale from 0 to 5.
In addition to applying this general grading system, pass/fail grade may be used when grading practical training and practical skills courses.
Traditions will be upheld in the grading of the Master's thesis, which will continue to be graded on a seven-level Latin language grading scale (approbatur - laudatur). Bachelor's theses, are graded on the common scale of 0-5.
The grading of postgraduate degrees will be renewed during the ongoing reform of doctoral, i.e. third cycle, education.
ECTS and Finnish grading system
The new grading scale is directly comparable to the ECTS grading scale, as shown below.
- 5 = excellent or A
- 4 = very good or B
- 3 = good or C
- 2 = satisfactory or D
- 1 = passable or E
- 0 = fail or F or FX
