Enrolment and Registration

Registration for attendance (or non-attendance) is obligatory for all students: undergraduates, graduates and postgraduates.

The registration time for the 2013-2014 academic year is 1.5.-2.9.2013.

For the first year students the registration is completed at the same time when they enroll to the University of Helsinki. From the second year on, you have to remember to register yourself.

A registration completed before the beginning of the academic year is cancelled, if the student's situation changes in a way that he/she no longer has a right to pursue a degree at the University of Helsinki for the academic year in question.

Automatic registration

Automatic registration is available during the registration period from May 1 to September 2, 2013.

  1. WebOodi – the most convenient way to register
WebOodi is the preferable way of registering as it is done fully on-line: your registration is valid immediately. If you have a user ID of the University of Helsinki and you have an Internet banking agreement with Nordea, OP-Pohjola Bank, Sampo Bank, or Aktia, the easiest way to pay and register is by WebOodi.
  2. Automatic registration without WebOodi
Another option for automatic registration is to pay the Student Union (HYY) fee at a bank, with an ATM (maksut) or at home with an on-line bank service. Your annual registration is automatically registered within two banking days, if you use your own student number as the reference number.

Registration in person

If you use the general reference number on the bank transfer or if you pay from a bank abroad, you have to remember to register in person. After paying the fee, you have to register yourself for attendance at the Student Services in either the City Centre or Kumpula Campus. Remember to bring the receipt of the payment with you.

For opening hours and contact information of the Student Services offices, please see their website.

Postgraduate students

If you are a postgraduate student, you must register either as an attending or a non-attending student for every academic year. For postgraduate students, the Student Union fee is voluntary. Please note that if you have both an undergraduate/graduate and a postgraduate student status, then you have to pay the student union fee for undergraduate/graduate students.

Registration with Student Union membership

If you want to join the Student Union for the full academic year or for the autumn term only, then you register using one of the options listed above.

If you want to join the Student Union for the spring term only, then you first pay the membership fee for the spring term. After paying the fee, you must present the receipt at the Student Services.

If you already registered for attendance without the student union membership, but then make up your mind to become a member for the full academic year or for the autumn term, then you have to pay the Student Union fee and present the receipt at the Student Services.

Registration without Student Union membership

If you do not want to become a member of the Student Union and if you have a user ID for the University's computer networks, you can register through the WebOodi-system. You can also register by contacting the Student Services.

Non-attendance

If you want to register for non-attendance, you must also inform the Student Services. This must be done from May 1 to September 2, 2013. You can register for non-attendance by e-mail, phone or by visiting the Student Services. If you send an e-mail, please include your student number or date of birth with it. You will find the contact information for the Student Services here.

Registering for the spring term

This registration information is for those who during the registration time registered for non-attendance for the entire academic year or attendance just for the autumn term and then decide to attend the University in the spring term.

The automatic registration options are not available when registering for the spring term. There is no set registration period, but registration has to be completed before studies begin.

If you are an undergraduate or graduate student, you need to pay the Student Union fee and then bring the receipt of the payment to the Student Services. The registration is completed at the Student Services.

If you are a postgraduate student, the Student Union fee is voluntary. If you paid the Student Union fee only for the autumn term and you would now like to pay the fee for the spring term you need to pay the fee and register at the Student Services. Bear in mind that if you have both an undergraduate/graduate and postgraduate study status, then the Student Union fee for undergraduate/graduate students is obligatory.

From the beginning of January you can pick up the yeartag for the spring term for your student card at the Student Services.

Did you forget to register?

If you do not register for attendance or non-attendance during the registration time (1.5.-31.8.) you will lose your right to pursue a degree at the University of Helsinki.

If you, after having failed to register at the University, wish to register as an attending or non-attending student during the same academic year i.e. before 31 July of the following year, then you have to pay the re-enrolment fee and show the receipt of the payment at the Student Services.

In addition to the receipt of the re-enrolment fee an undergraduate and graduate student who wants to register as attending, as well as those postgraduate students who want to become members of the Student Union, have to to show a receipt of the Student Union membership fee as well. As a receipt a printout from your Internet bank is enough if it shows the Arvchive ID.

If you wish to continue your studies after July 31, then you have to apply for readmission into the faculty and pay a degree-specific re-enrolment fee.

A student pursuing studies for a specialist’s degree in medicine or dentistry who has failed to register for attendance will not lose his or her right to pursue a degree and may thus register for attendance or non-attendance without separate application and is not liable to pay the re-enrolment fee. NB! From 1.8.2013 these students also have to pay the re-enrolment fee.

The re-enrolment fee is 35 euro. (Fee set by the Finnish Government 17.12.2009)
