Studies abroad and student exchange programmes

Focus on internationalisation

Internationalisation is very much in focus at the University of Helsinki. In addition to internationalisation at home – with the possibility for all students to participate in courses in English and with foreign teachers and researches as well as international students active in the community – the University also encourages students to complete a part of their degree studies abroad.

Exchange opportunities

The University of Helsinki has over 100 international co-operation agreements with universities around the world. The Faculties and Departments have approximately 450 Erasmus partner universities in Europe. There are also several agreements with Nordic universities within the NORDPLUS exchange programme. More opportunities for studies abroad are offered through the following programmes: AEN ( Utrecht/Australian European Network), MAUI ( Mid-America Universities International) as well as ISEP and ISEP Direct programmes. Other co-operation programmes are Erasmus Mundus, North2North, and North-South-South programmes.

Free mover students

The University also supports her students by awarding small scholarships for those degree students who independently seek a study place from a university abroad. A similar scholarship is also provided to independent internships abroad.

Transfers

All the completed studies abroad are transferable, with faculties and departments deciding upon compensations. All exchange programmes include scholarships.

Programme co-ordination

The International Exchange Services co-ordinate the exchange programmes. These services arrange presentations and give individual advice and counselling to students in all issues on studying abroad. For incoming exchange students, see Exchange student status.
