General phonetics investigates the mediation of a linguistic message from the speaker to the hearer, the segmental, prosodic and acoustic properties of speech, and the relationship between language and speech. Phonetic methods and results can be applied, e.g., to language teaching and speech technology.

Speech Communication

Speech communication research examines human speech communication behaviour in all kinds of interactional situations. At the University of Helsinki, research in Speech Communication is concentrated on public speaking, political communication, technologically mediated interaction, performance studies and voice training. It has been possible to pursue postgraduate studies in Speech Communication since the year 2003.


Logopedic research concentrates on the foundations of communication and interaction, their related disorders, and the development of effective methods for speech therapy. Logopedics is multidisciplinary in nature and it is closely connected with teaching.
